  • Russian President Vladimir Putin started out his career in KGB working in the Fifth Directorate, monitoring the activities of the students of the Leningrad University. He later worked for the KGB in East Germany.
  • In the post Soviet republic of Belarus, the KGB still operates under the same name and near identical insignia. Belarus is also the birthplace of Felix Dzerzhinsky, one of the founders of the Cheka.
